Américaine. Grande scientifique, seconde épouse de Carl Akeley avec qui elle s'est mariée en 1924, c'est avec lui qu'elle participe à son premier safari en 1926. La même année, Carl meurt mais Mary Jobe continuera à parcourir le Congo belge, l'Uganda et le Tanganyika. Renonçant à la chasse avide telle qu'il la pratiquait, elle agira désormais pour la préservation des espèces e facilitant, entre autres, la création des réserves.
